What you're seeing: smoke plumes are drawn by NOAA satellite analysts (Hazard Mapping System) several times a day from GOES imagery — light plumes are often high aloft and may not affect ground-level air quality (the home page's AQI shows what's actually breathable). Fire points are automated GOES/VIIRS/MODIS hotspot detections; named incidents are staffed US wildfires from the national interagency system (WFIGS). Canadian fires appear as satellite detections and smoke but not as named incidents — see CWFIS below. Layers refresh every 10 minutes.
